Arguably the most important part of the site, Datenbanken connects users to the site’s collections of records and is made up of these headings:
GEDBAS (a clipped form of “Gedcom database”): Family trees that users have contributed live here (and are detailed later).
FOKO (short for Forscherkontakte, “Researcher Contacts”): Search this database of queries if you need to contact professional researchers for information—more on this later.
GOV, the Genealogisches Ortsverzeichnis: As has been discussed in the section on the English side of the site, this valuable resource contains the names of towns and villages that may no longer exist.
Ortsfamilienbücher (Local Heritage Books): These books, which compile all the families from a particular village, are available here in a searchable database. We’ll discuss these in more detail later in this chapter and in chapter 9.
Adressbücher (City Directories): These resources are collections of year-by-year residential lists from urban areas—more on these later.
Familienanzeigen (Family Notices): These include personal notes taken from newspapers, including birth and wedding announcements and other notices such as graduations.
Grabsteine (Gravestones): While many physical gravestones have been removed (see chapter 1), records of them survive in databases like this one.
Totenzettel (Funeral Notices): A deceased person’s biography was often presented at his funeral service, and these sources can be found here.
Verlustlisten (Casualty Lists): This ongoing project documents those who were killed, wounded, or missing in World War I.
Literaturdatenbank (Literature Database): Here, you can search list of articles published in various genealogy journals.
